SABC Celebrates Nelson Mandela International Day

SABC will be celebrating the Nelson Mandela International Day on July, through various activations and campaigns around the country.


                             SABC CELEBRATES NELSON MANDELA INTERNATIONAL DAY

 

SABC will be celebrating the Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July, through various activations and campaigns around the country. Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Madiba’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. 

The SABC through the SABC Foundation will be commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day in partnership with Bikers for Mandela, an initiative that will see bikers, celebrities and corporate partners Don Helmets take part in the seven annual Bikers for Mandela Day campaign, (14-18 July 2016) from Johannesburg and will end in Mozambique.

Radio 2000 in partnership with sister station, Channel Africa will commemorate Mandela Day by “devoting 67 minutes of community service” to the homeless in Johannesburg CBD. The stations plan to feed the homeless and donate blankets to keep them warm during the winter months. Radio 2000 will return to Joubert Park for the fourth consecutive year on Monday, 18 July 2016. On the day of the event, Radio 2000 will be broadcasting from the park between 9am – 3pm with live broadcasts of two shows; Emlanjeni with KG Moeketsi (9am – midday) and Lunch on 2000 with Bertha Charuma (midday – 3pm). 

Other SABC activities lined up for the International Mandela Day are as follows:

MotswedingFM

Motsweding FM will have a “Mandela Day soccer Cup tournament” which will comprise of four high schools residing in communities around Potchefstroom.(Promosa High School; BA Seobi High school; Tegnies Hoer Skool; and Resolofetse High School)

A knockout format will be used on the day, and only registered students at a school will be eligible to take part at the tournament with the age limit of 21. All the day’s soccer matches will be 33, 5 minutes each half as a way of devoting 67 minutes towards public service. 

Finalists will each receive full soccer kit to use for the soccer cup final, trophies and medals will be given to the winning and the losing team. Individual awards will be awarded to best performers on the day and the winning school will also walk away with a cheque they can use towards school related needs.

The station will also be conducting broadcasting and presenter workshops for aspiring presenters or people that want to venture into radio. Entrance is free and gates open at 09H00  

Ikwekwezi FM:

iKwekwezi FM is partnering with Nedbank and the two organisations have nominated Mhlutshwa Primary School based in Verena, Mpumalanga Province as the beneficiary to receive R 50, 000 towards Mandela Day Project.  The school has disadvantaged pupils some of whom are orphans.  SABC Gauteng Province will donate old desktop computers (in working condition) to the nominated beneficiary and 50 blankets will be donated to selected kids at the same school.  The event will be broadcast on various time channels, but will be spearheaded by the 09h00 – 12h00 show which will be broadcast live from the venue.

 

truFM: 

trufm will be working in partnership with Correctional Services; SABC Foundation and the Methodist church in handing over a house to a child-headed family in Queenstown (Chris Hani Municipality).  The SABC Foundation has committed R150 000 towards the roof and furniture of the house while the Young Men’s Guild from the Methodist church have committed to building the foundation and the walls of the house.  The house is already being built by offenders from correctional services and will be handed over to the family on the 18th July at a ceremony hosted by the station.

 

Metro FM:

The station is partnering with the Fight Club and will host the Celebrity Boxing in order to raise funds for children living with chronic illnesses.  This will be a way for all involved to spend 67 minutes during Mandela month.  The station will host a minimum of 6 boxing matches with Metro FM DJs and other SA celebrities all in the name of charity.  This event is proposed to take place in Soweto, Zone 6 on Saturday, 23 July 2016.  Tickets will be sold at Computicket @ R150.00 per ticket and all proceeds will be donated to a charity.
 

Phalaphala FM:

Phalaphala FM will celebrate Mandela Day by donating school books to 28 schools (21 primary and 7 secondary schools) under Mutshundudi circuit,  Vhembe Municipality in Limpopo on the 18 July 2016.  Phalaphala fm will also dedicated 67 minutes of Mandela Day by donating sleepers shoes to the stations loyal senior citizens (grand mothers and grand fathers).  The station will broadcast from the venue from 09h00-12h00.

 

SAFM:

SAFM kick starts Mandela Month with a daily Blanket Drive, Soup Kitchen activation with Gift of the Givers during the National Arts Festival from the 2nd to the 12th of July, to which SAFM is a partner.  SAFM will make sure the underprivileged community of Grahamstown have a meal and blankets for the bitter cold nights.  An organization that has captured SAFM’s attention is Retshwenyegile Relief Givers, a non- profit organisation in Bodibe village (about 10 km’s outside Mahikeng) SAfm will spend Mandela day with this community to offer support and assistance just like Tata would.

Then SAFM moves to KZN from the 16th – 18th July:

 

  • 16 & 17 July – Youth Conference and building of the community hall and library
  • 17 July – Distribution of food parcels and school shoes to underprivileged communities
  • 18 July – Donation of laptops at Khulakahle Primary School and the reveal of the Hall & Library

 

Munghana Lonene FM: 

Will be working towards renovation of Mugidi High School and an orphanage home in Arconhoek in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.  On the same day the station will also hand over a borehole site/project to the community of Casteel also in Bushbuckridge.  Donate food parcels and educational toys to a local home based centre and crèche.  To conclude the day, the station’s Afternoon Drive Show (3-6Thwii) will broadcast live from Acornhoek Shopping Centre. Donate / Hand over a 2nd borehole to the community of Lulekani as well as giving free eye test to about 400 community members and thereafter donation of 400 reading glasses to one previously disadvantaged community (village / settlement).  The latter is intended on promoting the culture of reading. Donate / Hand over a 3rd& 4th borehole to communities of Phalawubeni and Makhuva in the Greater Giyani Municipality. The station then moves to Makhado Municipality where we will officially hand-over Hlanganani Circuit Office to the builders to resume work.  The project was initiated by Munghana Lonene FM and Bold Moves Foundation in 2014.

 

Umhlobo Wenene FM:

  • On the 18th July Umhlobo Wenene’s breakfast show will broadcast from the Nelson Mandela children’s hospital in Johannesburg to inform the world on the state of readiness of the hospital.
  • On the 19th July UWFM’s afternoon drive will broadcast from mama Winnie Madikizela’s house in Soweto
  • On the 20th July UWFM’s Breakfast show and midmorning show will broadcast from Qunu Museum
  • On 22 July UWFM will broadcast on the N2 outside tata Mandela’s house in Qunu
  • On 1st – 29 July UWFM will run a social media campaign giving away four pairs of Crockett and Jones shoes.

 

5FM:

Fresh @ 5 helps the Samaritan Children’s Home in Polokwane, 11 – 15 July 2016.  Each day on the Fresh @ 5 the audience will be asked to help donate certain needs for the home.  This would be an appeal to audience to help under the banner of #bemoremadiba. On Thursday 14 July The Roger Goode show will begin their ‘Roger Goode Show in a Cage’ from a Mall in Johannesburg.  Beginning at 16:00 onThursday and finishing at 19:00 on Friday, making an appeal to the public to help the SPCA with donations.  This will again fall under the banner of #bemoremadiba. On 17 July every 67 minutes there will be a cross over to an audience member or on-air personality to ask them about how they are ‘being more Madiba’.  This will be accompanied by a countdown to the next 67 minute crossing where audiences will be encouraged to #bemoremadiba.

 

Good Hope FM: 

For Madiba Day, Good Hope FM will identify a small/medium primary school in need of assistance.  The station will ascertain from the school what their requirements are for the school and it’s learners.  The DJ’s will do a call out on air, requesting assistance from listeners to assist the identified primary school. On Madiba Day, Good Hope FM will visit the identified school and serve breakfast to the pupils and the staff.  The breakfast will be prepared by Good Hope FM staff and DJ’s and served to the kids. .

The station will broadcast the Good Hope FM Breakfast Show with Nigel Pierce and The Hype with Dan and Sherlin from the school premises and will handover all items collected on the day.

 

Ukhozi FM:

Ukhozi FM through VMBS team will fundraise through individuals, business people and companies to assist the Tshwane home of hope which is a non-profit organization, a safe haven for young girls in crisis. The delivery of the needs will be on the 18th July where our breakfast show will broadcast live from the home.

On the 27th July 2016 Ukhozi FM will visit Zamimpilo Special School, KwaCeza to deliver and launch a three month supply for the sanitary pads for young girls which are to be collected in partnership with Imbumba Foundation. Some other needs have been identified from that school namely Disposable nappies, Protective gloves, Wheel chairs, Walking frames, Blankets, School uniform and Warm blankets.  Live telephonic crossings will be made from there.

 

Lotus FM:

18th July 2016 The station will be broadcasting from 7am to 3pm from the Chatsworth Youth Centre which was opened by Nelson Mandela. Lotus will be doing a call to action whereby staff, listeners and well-wishers drop off items to assist with the renovations or donate items which are required to maintain the facility. The teams will be at the venue on the 18th July 2016 assisting with the clean-up of the centre and the garden area. Various shows will be interviewing listeners, management of both lotus FM and Chatsworth Youth Centre pertaining to the day’s event.

20th July 2016

  • The station will be broadcasting from  10 to 12pm from the Chatsworth  Stadium  where 1500 pre-school children will be attending a fun day. The theme for the day is Unity, Patriotism and Heritage
  • The station will be doing a call to action for staff, listeners and well-wishers to donate stationary and goodies for the brown paper bags which will be distributed to each child on the day.
